Having discussed so much already, let us now go straight into how we can manually carryout a keyword difficulty analysis.
Keyword Difficulty Analysis
This is the method of determining how easy or difficult it is for a webpage to rank under certain keywords. In this practice, there are some parameters considered which include;
How many pages are already ranked on the keyword.
How many webpages are bidding for the keyword on paid search campaigns.
The domain authorities and ranking strength of the already and top ranking websites on the keyword.
Relevancy of the results returned on a particular search query to the already ranking websites.
The level of On-page and Off-page optimization of the ranking pages.
In keyword difficulty analysis, the first thing to consider before continuing to use a particular keyword is the websites ranking on the first page on Google. You should have in mind that there are certain websites you can not out-rank especially for less popular domain authority blogs and websites. These are strong and high domain authority websites. You can easily find this by simply searching your keyword on Google. When searching for your keywords, make sure to first open a any tab on private or incognito mode to avoid Google favoring your most used websites and blogs on the search result.
Now, let us consider the search query, “Samsung Galaxy S6”.
If you make the search as shown above, you would find that all the websites ranking on the first page are websites with very high domain authority which would be impossible to compete with and out-rank.
Still considering the above search query, let us find out how many ranked pages are well optimized on the keyword; Samsung Galaxy S6. Note that all your search should be done on incognito or private mode.
Now, we are going to repeat the search under the following categories;
AllinUrl: To find out how many ranked pages have the entire keyword on their URLs.
AllinTitle: To find out how many ranked pages have the entire keyword on their titles.
AllinText: To find out how many ranked pages have the entire keyword on their post bodies.
Now, take note of the number of post in each case. Create a table as shown below to help you compare the data. You can also skip this part if you would be able to compare the data without a table.
Now, take a close look at the data on the table. The number of pages which have optimized their URLs and title with the entire keyword is relatively large and also the number of post having the entire keyword in the post body. In my opinion through experience, it would only take a blog or website with a high domain authority to compete for a position on the first page in Google for such keyword. Therefore, you are advised to stay away from it, else you would be working in vain. You can look for other lesser competitive keywords to write on. e.g; “The Price of Samsung Galaxy S6 in India”. Keywords with total result less than or within 1,000,000 to 1,500,000, allinurl and allintitle result less than or within 1,000 to 1,500 are good to work with. You have a high possibility of ranking in the first page with good on-page and off-page optimization if you work with such keywords.
You can also visit some of the top ranking websites on your keywords to see how they wrote their post and how well they optimized their pages. Check for how many external links that are pointing to the post from other website, check for social share strength to know how best to treat your post.
