As expected, Apple announced the release of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus smartphones at its September 7th press conference in San Francisco. The phones has come under huge criticism and praise from opinion divided iPhone users. In this post, we shall be looking at the key points you should know before buying any of the iPhone 7 smartphones.

1. Headphone Jack Removed

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Apple has finally and officially put an end to the use of the 3.5mm Audio Jack with the release of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus smartphones. Apple has not actually explained properly why they decided to exclude the most popular headphone connector in the iPhone 7, but we believe they have a good and justifiable reason for doing that.

According to the Apple marketing chief, Phil Schiller, Apple had been motivated by "courage" to get rid of the headphone jack. He said,
Some people have asked us why we would remove the analogue headphone jack. It's been with us a really long time and it comes down to one word: courage. Our team has tremendous courage. our smartphones are packed with technologies, faster processors... and all of it fights for space.
Although, Apple has included a pair of lightening EarPods in the iPhone 7 box, but this means that it would be impossible for you to charge your phone and listen to music over a headphone at the same time as both the battery charger and the earpods use the same port. Also, Apple would include a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, so you can continue using your wired headphones with the handset.

Also, Apple is releasing wireless headphones for you to buy alongside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, called AirPods. The AirPods which are to be connected via Bluetooth are quite expensive, $159 (£159, AU$229), and look very easy to lose if not stored in the charging case.

2.  It's Water/Dust Resistant

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus
Apple described the iPhone 7 as its first "water resistant" smartphone during the September 7, 2016 Press Conference at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

A lot of people do not actually know what this really means and may miss it up with waterproof. Therefore, we are going to throw light on this iPhone 7 subject matter.

The Apple iPhone 7 smartphones are rated at an IP Code of IP67 which makes them not truly waterproof devices unlike the Apple Watch Series 2. This means that the iPhone 7 can only survive being submerged in fresh water of 1m deep for 30minutes unlike the Samsung Samsung galaxy s7 and Note 7 which are rated at IP68 standard and are technically more protected against water ingress. Apple used a water and dust seal to prevent the intrusion of water and dust into the iPhone 7 which is not so good compared the Galaxy s7 and Note 7 which are able to expel water from their cases by steaming it out.

The question you may want to ask is; can I go swimming with my iPhone 7 smartphone? The simple answer to that question is YES, but you are liable to end up with a very expensive paperweight. You should also know that the Apple iPhone 7 has no warranty covering damages resulting from water ingress, so you should be careful when immersing your iPhone 7 in water as an excessive water pressure may damage it.

3. New Home Button Introduced

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

In addition to the exclusion of the 3.5mm headphone jack, another obvious feature that has changed in the iPhone 7 and 7 plus smartphones is the usual mechanical/physical home button which has been replaced with a capacitive/force sensitive home button. The iPhone 7 new home button is a static button that gives you the feeling that you are pressing a regular button with the help of a new Taptic Engine. Although most of the features of the initial home button were retained, the new home button has some new features included in it and there would be a little difference in operation of the static  home button.

One of the major operations that would no longer work with the new iPhone 7 home button is the "force reboot" feature which was used to force reboot your iPhone when there is a system failure by pressing the home button and power button simultaneously.

4. No 16GB Model

Apple has also put an end to 16GB model of its phones starting with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus smartphones. The iPhone 7 smartphones were released with three storage capacity options which include 32GB, 128GB and 256GB. This is really a good upgrade for those who have needs for larger storage spaces. If you are one of those who does not have need for a large storage space and would just want to get the usual 16GB at a cheaper rate, the iPhone 7 smartphones are really not for you.

5. Two Brand New Colors Added

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Apple released the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus in 5 colors. The phones still retained the usual gold, rose gold and silver colors, while the originally used black/gray color has been replaced with a matte black color which seems darker and a brand new jet black color has been added. See all the colors in the image above.

6. No Wireless Charging

It was rumored before the official release that the iPhone 7 would support wireless charging. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Wireless charging is a pretty convenient way to keep a phone's battery topped up, and rumors suggested the tech was pretty high on Apple's agenda. I guess we would have to wait longer.

Other things to note before buying the iPhone 7 and 7 plus

Apart from the six points noted above, other things the prospective buyers of the iPhone 7 and 7 plus should note include;
  1. The iPhone 7 smartphones has an improved battery life compared to the iPhone 6 smartphones
  2. The screen resolution and quality didn't change. Still the same with that of the iPhone 6 smartphones
  3. The iPhone 7 also has a better camera and the iPhone 7 plus has a dual rear camera.
